DISCOVERY TASK 2:

Locate articles about the Family from  Godey’s Ladys Book, a magazine published between 1830 and 1875

ASSIGNMENT:           

A.  Use Godey’s Ladys Book, an electronic journal archive and an example of a primary source, to find articles about the Family written  between 1830 and 1875.    

B.  Write a paragraph comparing and contrasting the images of family suggested by one of the articles in Godey’s with one of the images of family presented in Huckleberry Finn..

OBJECTIVES:

A.  Recognize the characteristics of a primary source.

B.  Access electronic journal articles that are examples of primary sources.

C.  Select, read and summarize a primary source article on the topic of the Family written between 1830 and 1875.

D.  Compare and contrast the verbal image of Family suggested by the one of the articles from  Godey’s with depictions of families in Huckleberry Finn.

WHAT TO DO TO COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT

HINT:  Read the instructions completely before you start working on the assignment!

Use Godey’s Ladys Book to find an article on the Family written between 1830 and 1875.

1.  Select the Online Resources Link from the Libraries’ Homepage (www.lib.uci.edu).

2.  Enter Godey’s Ladys Book in the Search Box and select the Online Journals category.

3.  Press Search and then click on the link to Godey’s Lady's Book on  the Search Results screen.

4.  Enter the word Family in the Basic Search box.  Select the years of the Godey’s Ladys Book you wish to search.

Hint: There are other primary sources available from Accessible Archives which might also be useful for your search.  Check the Database Description to determine the content of each database. 

5.  Press Search and review your results.

6.  Note that each result gives you the date of the issue from Godey’s which serves as a link to the full text of the article, an abstract or short summary of the article, and a link to Show Highlights which gives you more information about the article.

7.  You may find that you retrieve too many results using a single word search.  You can narrow your search by selecting only one time period to search, for example, 1830-1845.

8.  You can also try searching different terms such as Children or Motherhood or Marriage or phrases such as Husband and Wife or Domestic Bliss.

9.  Select an article that you think will help you to understand the image of Family Life that Godey’s Ladys Book presents to its readers.  Answer the following questions about the article:

A.  When was it written?

B.  What historical events were occurring at this time?

C.  What kind of language does the writer use to describe Families or Family Life?  What is the image of families or family life that the article portrays?

10.  Write a paragraph that compares and contrasts the image of Family portrayed by the Godey’s Ladys Book with one of the families described in Huckleberry Finn.  This paragraph will help you to prepare your argument for Essay 3.
